  • Excerpt from Impetus // Choreographer: Nell Shipman

Set to the dynamic pace of Karl Jenkins' music composition "Palladio," Nell Shipman's choreography in Impetus brings human determination to life in this abstract piece. Illustrating the strength required to move forward with both persistence and purpose, Impetus is a longstanding audience favorite, showcasing the athleticism, beauty, and power brought by the artists of Portland Ballet.

  • Antithesis // Choreographers: Jackson Gormley & Rebecca Woll

In Antithesis, choreographers Jackson Gormley and Rebecca Woll take two contrasting original works by Isadora Duncan, a founder of modern dance, and discover how two dramatically different works might be combined.

The first piece, Water Study, is a piece from Duncan’s early career representing child’s play and the different ways water flows. The second piece, Revolutionary, which Duncan choreographed later in her career in 1921 after the Russian revolution, is filled with emotional turmoil and a call for change.

In Water Study, the choreography remains close to Duncan’s, but here Gormley and Woll have restaged the two pieces to weave in and out of each other in juxtaposition ideating on the technique and themes of the original pieces.Antithesis brings a nuanced understanding of the original works while also shedding light on intersections of innocence and maturity, purity and intensity, and the ability to coexist on a continuum in the same space.

  • Four Seasons // Choreographer: Nell Shipman

Choreographed by Artistic Director Nell Shipman during the pandemic, Four Seasons explores how external circumstances shape individuals and how those changes ripple across a community. Set to Vivaldi's emblematic "The Four Seasons," the piece entwines solo dances into larger, cohesive ensemble work. Expressions of hope, desperation, confinement, and freedom leave audiences with both reassurances and convictions.
