For thousands of years and all across the world, people have been fascinated by the magic of indigo dye. In this two-day workshop each person will learn how to dye with indigo and use shibori techniques to create patterns on cloth. We will explore the following:

• How to make an indigo vat

• Itajime folded and clamped resist

• Stitch Resist

Students will learn proper safety, vatting techniques, and dyeing strategies for each shibori method. This workshop is for ALL LEVELS meaning those who have no experience to advanced students are welcome. Each student will leave with beautifully dyed fabrics, scarves, or wearables, Japanese indigo seeds if they wish to grow their own indigo, and instructional handouts to continue their exploration.

----

All Indigo and vat chemicals, some wooden shapes, and clamps will be included but students should bring the following:

• Extra long rubber gloves (elbow length/26-28 inch is best, others work okay)

• A N-95 or KN-95 mask (for mixing vat chemicals)

• A spool of 100% polyester thick upholstery thread, sewing needles- various sizes.

• Fabric: Indigo will only dye natural fibers: 100% cotton, silk, rayon, and linen. (NO WOOL, NO SYNTHETIC FABRIC). You will need at least 3 yards of white 100% cotton fabric to create samples and practice. After that you will probably want silk, linen, or rayon scarf blanks, blank t-shirts, and various other items. You can purchase those at dharmatrading.com, maiwa.com, testfabrics.com, or prochemicalanddye.net

• Optional: extra shapes and clamps, poles, yarn, pebbles, cork, nails or screws (for some interesting tying effects).
