Why’d We Book it: (M) Factor
Welcome to the new segment on the 3S Blog — "Why’d We Book it?"
We want to bring our 3S community into the know on the events coming up at 3S that have us shouting from the rooftops: “Hello! Friends! Something super FUN is coming to Portsmouth!”
We know that not all of the acts we book are widely known. This is partly because it is paramount to our vision as a contemporary arts organization to bring up-and-coming acts to our Performance Space stage for all of you culturally curious folks out there.
We don’t want you to miss out on an event that would have been right up your alley just because you had never heard of an act before. That’s why we’re highlighting some of our upcoming events in this segment — to give you a greater understanding into the kind of night you’re in for when you attend.
The (M) Factor: Shredding the Silence on Menopause Film Screening + Q&A on June 4
The (M) Factor: Shredding the Silence on Menopause film explores the hidden impact of menopause on women's lives. Menopause has ramifications beyond just an individual woman’s well-being. The far-ranging results of women enduring untreated menopause include billions of dollars in lost wages, upended careers, family disruptions, and emotional chaos.
With evidence-based information, the film empowers women to make informed health decisions and aims to remove the stigma surrounding menopause and aging.
This feature-length documentary film, centers on the lived experiences of women across the U.S. Cameras follow women into their doctors’ offices, at work, and in their homes to expose the challenges they face—including racial biases, gender-ignorant care, inequitable structures and systems, and barriers due to the lack of basic midlife healthcare research. The women featured here open up about their experiences and share their stories of enduring debilitating symptoms while being ignored, ridiculed and/or shamed—and left untreated.
Now there’s a movement to fix the broken system, change the culture and transform our future. The (M) Factor turns the spotlight on the progress being made. With input from emboldened physicians, healthcare advocates and leaders in the menopause movement, the film focuses on what is being done to address this public health crisis and offers solutions that can be replicated in medical communities and workplaces across the country.
So… Why’d we book it at 3S?
Due to the enduring success of Period. The End? (a comedic storytelling event about menopause which always sells out, produced by Erin LaPlante and Stephanie Lazenby) it reinforced the need and desire from a large audience for more programming centered on women’s health and aging. Part of 3S Artspace’s mission is to encourage lively discourse centered around issues of today through the lens of contemporary art experiences. The combination of the film and the Q+A panel with health experts in the field felt like a perfect opportunity to encourage discussion around perimenopause and menopause, all while bringing the community together. The (M) Factor feels like a next step in this line of programming.
We think audiences will leave feeling informed, heard, and like they have access to a network they may not have had before.
