Safety precautions taken during the COVID pandemic have brought heightened attention to the use of outdoor public spaces in cities and towns and the importance of making them inviting and usable the entirety of the year.

In Portsmouth, NH the benefits of activating our public spaces throughout the winter season will extend far beyond the current circumstances. As a heavily touristed and highly active area in the summer, Portsmouth and the Seacoast lose much of this social dynamism and economic support in the winter. What are the strategies that cities like Portsmouth could employ to promote social interaction and vitality downtown in the cold and quiet months?

Join Portsmouth Smart Growth Wednesday January 27 at 7 pm for a virtual presentation and discussion with award-winning urban designer and planner Simon O’Byrne to learn ways Portsmouth can activate public space in winter.
