This fall, 3S Artspace welcomes selected students to participate in a series of 10 free art workshops led by artist Richard Haynes. The art workshops represent the next phase in the Culture Keepers, Culture Makers series which began at 3S in the spring of 2021 with weekly public conversations on culture’s influence on race and equity.

During the workshops, students are led by Richard Haynes through the creation of the two-dimensional pieces featured in this exhibit.

Haynes’ own artwork has developed a signature, colorful style over time and focuses on positive, hopeful imagery. It is his own response to the question, “If we were to disappear today, what would we think about our culture?”

Richard Haynes and Kristen Butterfield-Ferrell developed Culture Keepers, Culture Makers as a way to reinforce the importance of a safe space to talk about race openly.

“'Culture Keepers' is an important vehicle for facilitating the kind of dialogue we tend to shy away from, whether due to fear, ignorance, or simply discomfort. With these workshops, we can also dispel the notion that only some of us are artists and encourage everyone to explore art and joyful expression.” -- Richard Haynes

This ongoing series has given Richard, Kristen, the 3S team, and members of our community time to get to know each other and keep conversations, workshops, and exhibitions related to race and equity going throughout the year.
