Third Space

December 5 - January 25 | Opening Reception during Art 'Round Town: December 5 / 5 - 8pm

Exhibit Statement

Third Space concludes 3S Artspace's 10th anniversary year with an immersive, community-driven experience in the Gallery. The exhibit builds on the beloved success of our 2019 exhibition, Room for Memory, and is rooted in the social concept of a "third space" or "third place"—a welcoming environment beyond home and work. Third Space transforms the Gallery into a sanctuary of creativity, connection, and comfort during the holiday and winter season.

Ryan previously served as Assistant Professor of Sculpture at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA.

Join us on Friday, December 5 during Art 'Round Town to explore the new exhibit. The evening includes a live music set from Stu Dias, performing songs from the Diaspora Radio concert series, and small bites provided by Stella's Cafe, The Press Room and Ohana Kitchen. 5 - 8pm. Free and open to the public.

The exhibition features three unique lounge environments by invited designers and creatives:

The Listening Room, curated by 3S, features papercutting interpretations of classic album covers created by artist Dylan Metrano made for the popular Diaspora Radio concert series held at The Press Room. Both his source papercuttings and the resulting promotional show posters will be on view.

The Garden, curated by 3S Artspace Board Member and Gallery Committee Member,  Emily Leach, evokes the warmth and glow of a tropical garden in the cold days of New England winter. Featuring works by multiple regional artists, including Jess Dickey, Terry Golson, Aurora Robson and Adrienne Elise Tarver, visitors to this room are surrounded by a magical world inspired by the outdoors where families and friends can retreat on bleak winter days to entertain, uplift, and rejuvenate.

"When my kids were little, one of our favorite weekend activities was to go to Wentworth Greenhouses in Rollinsford, around the corner from where I live. We'd breathe the warm air, explore the lush plants, and wonder at the living art sculptures they create. I designed this room to bring me back to that time and give families a way to experience that same feeling through beautiful and innovative works of art." - Emily Leach

The Après Ski Lounge is curated by documentary film director, photographer, ski designer, and proud 3S Board Member, Harrison Buck. The Lounge features an exhibit, Four Edges to Freedom, with works by Buck in collaboration with tattoo artist Heather Quinn, Parlor Skis, and Dana Schultz. The room itself is a vessel, holding the arc of Buck’s creative journey from photographer to ski designer to documentary filmmaker— a love letter to the natural world and a conduit for human connection, design experimentation, and storytelling.

Our community bar, 3S Barspace, joins together the three rooms, providing additional cozy space to gather during exhibition hours, before shows, for live music and DJ events, and more! Stay tuned for pop-up event announcements and co-working opportunities in the Gallery this winter season.

Dylan Metrano

Dylan Metrano is a papercutting artist based in Bath, Maine. He grew up in Newburyport, MA, where he was an active member of the theater and music communities. He spent many years living on Monhegan Island, ten miles off the coast of Maine, drawing inspiration from its centuries‐old buildings and migratory birds.

Drawn to the simplicity of form, the boldness and relationships of colors, and cleanness of composition, Dylan’s artwork is entirely composed of meticulously cut and carefully layered paper.

Dylan is a self‐taught artist, and has had his artwork featured on numerous album covers, book covers, posters, and in exhibitions throughout New England.

He has shown work at the Newburyport Art Association, the Firehouse Gallery (Newburyport, MA), The Lupine Gallery (Monhegan, ME), Archipelago (Rockland, ME), 3S Artspace (Portsmouth, NH), and many other galleries.

In February 2016, Scholastic published “Every Day Birds“, a children’s book which Dylan illustrated with his papercuttings.

Dylan also plays in the bands Tiger Saw and Cape Snow.

They are inspired by a life observing and working with animals of all kinds.

She shares these methods with others who want to reduce and  transform plastic waste. Aurora has received several awards, including the Pollock-Krasner Grant and a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship.
