Sketching animals is a way to get to know them. Whether you are an artist who feels that you never get the animal quite right, or simply someone who loves animals and wants to understand them on a deeper level, then this workshop with artist Terry Golson is for you.
Terry is a sculptor who uses drawing in her practice as a guide for the animals that she creates. With her background in animal training and behavior, the personality and natural history of each animal is at the forefront of her sculptures.
Using photos, field guides, and anatomy books as references, she'll share how to draw from real life (unfortunately, Terry can't bring her horse to 3S!). Guiding participants through big, quick sketches on newsprint using fat markers, she'll teach participants how to hone the eye so the essence of a chosen animal shines through. As you sketch, the animal will become more true to you.
This is a process workshop, not one aiming for a final painting at the end of the session. Particpants will leave with drawings that can become the base of future art and act as a reminder of a deep appreciation of the animals in our world.
What to bring:
Participants are asked to bring multiple photos of an animal they want to get to know better. These photos should include a variety of angles and poses. Terry will have plenty of photo references to use, as well.
About Terry Golson:
Terry is a sculptor who works out of Chases Garage, in York, Maine. Terry's art is inspired by a life observing and working with animals of all kinds. Terry's home faces a beaver marsh where wildlife abounds. Although she been a professional animal trainer, she doesn't see training as a one-sided way to get an animal to do what you want, rather it's a channel to communicate across species. She tries to convey that relationship in her sculptures and hopes that they engage the viewer in conversation.
